Biochips

Biochips are technologies that combine semiconductors with biological sciences. They are made with glass, plastic, silicon, or quartz and hold biological material to be analyzed. These tiny laboratories can perform multiple experiments and biological reactions in short amounts of time.

What Small and Midsize Businesses Need to Know About Biochips

The most common biochip, called “lab-on-chip,” contains microsensors and uses microfluidic micro-electromechanical systems (MEMS) technology to analyze DNA, RNA, proteins, and some chemicals. The DNA biochip, or DNA array, is used to identify the expressions of genes in DNA that’s on the biochip’s surface. The protein biochip, or protein microarray, is used to study the actions of proteins. Biochip technology has opened the doors to innovative opportunities for even small businesses, such as testing drugs and diagnosing diseases.
