Works well but has limitations for large counseling programs
Comments: This keeps our program running well and all the counselors can stay on top of their paperwork. It has it's limitations but it is working fine for us.
Pros:
It is very intuitive and easy to learn how to use the basic functions. All our staff use it daily and generally can use all of the needed functions with limited training. The price is reasonable and the support is pretty good. They are friendly and understand the problem.
Cons:
We have found several limitations for our counseling center: 1) we see multiple members in a family with different counselors. You cannot create more than one account with one email. So if there is only 1 parent and 2 children that need to be seen we need to be creative in how to get intake paperwork to them. 2) Some of the forms are not customizable. We tried to use our own Intake and Treatment Plans, but then none of it had interface with the other features, so we went back to using their forms, but they are not in the format we need for Medicaid and for our own needs. 3) we do assessments to track progress. They recently added a few basic standardized assessment tools, but we would prefer to use our own that we developed. So we need to use Survey Monkey for that function. Generally we would prefer a product we can tailor more to our program needs, but realize this would cost a lot more. So for the money, this is an adequate product for us.

Hi Linda! Thank you for the thoughtful review! We are glad to hear that TheraNest is working for you with your large practice! We understand that the type of animal assisted therapy you provide comes with it's own unique needs, and while we offer some customization of our clinical documentations you are looking for more. Rest assured we are always working to improve upon our product and it's customer feedback like yours that helps us get there. Thank you for these suggestions!
Very good software
Comments: I enjoyed the ease of the program but was never taught billing on it.
Pros:
I could do my job as a clinician with minimal downtime or disruption
Cons:
Occasionally having downtimes because so many people were on our system at the same time.
Ruined my Billing
Comments: It's been awful. Their services are so terrible, the customer service is none existance, it almost forced me to close my business because of the billing issues Theranest created by using there in house billing. Worse, THEY DO NOT CARE! There is no customer service, only a chat bot and a random email that say "a ticket has been created". No one ever helps you to resolve your issue. Now I'm missing thousnads of dollars in claims and can't find a way to correct it. I've been in private practice for 10 years and always used office ally and always managed my own billing. I should not have left office ally. DO NOT TRUST YOUR FINANCES AND BUSINESS AT THERANEST!
Pros:
It was a find product 5 years ago and worked primarily ok until Theranest offered for me to use their integrated billing system. I thought I was saving myself energy, time and money. The opposite has happened. I've had to switch EHRs because they took over my system and completely lost all of my bills, I have no way to track them, they are gone. They will not call me to help. I've lost thousands of dollars because of their billing system.
Cons:
They offered integrated and managed billing. It never worked, they never assisted me with help, and now I am missing thousands in claims. I can not figure out how to fix it. Everything was find using Office Ally, and then I switched to Apex at their recommendation. I'm so upset. It has created hours and months of distress and they only feign a response. I'm constantly told "I'll create a ticket for this" and then they never get back to me, or deny accountability for there even being a problem. They are like working with another insurance company. I will never recommend this EHR. I will actively advise against it.
Alternatives Considered:
User friendly start to finish.
Comments: TheraNest is capable of providing the manager and practitioners ways to individualize their workflows from charting notes to communicating with clients and other work mates. Training to use the product flows well and your can use the self-help options for finding the answer to most user questions. When you are unable to find the answer yourself or you have a glitch, customer service is courteous, patient, and solves the issue.
Pros:
Ease of set up, daily use, billing management with Optum and Medicaid.
Cons:
I would like to have complete billing management with all of my insurance products, esp. Anthem/BCBS
Review of TheraNest
Comments: Excellent. I have been using TheraNest since 2014. The program originally served my needs as a solo practitioner in search of an efficient paperless practice management tool from the beginning and has only been getting better since.
Pros:
Ease of use for my paperless solo psychotherapy practice.Critically important for scheduling, patients records, patient histories, therapy notes, and billing.
Cons:
There are still a few residual button-labeling, semantic inconsistency, and page-targeting issues that I think need to be resolved for the program to perform at its very best from a user-interface and user-experience point of view. That said, improvements are continuously being made by the Development Team. Note that the user interface has been recently revised and refreshed for dramatically improved appearance and ease of navigation.

Alternatives Considered:
Depends On Your Needs
Comments: It was decent. They have superb customer service. I really liked how attentive they are to your needs and are very open to making sure your issues are resolved.
Pros:
Uploading documents into client's charts was a breeze. It made it easy for my staff and I to review charts electronically. The calendar feature is very user-friendly.
Cons:
It was very difficult to figure out how to co-sign on my staff notes. I needed this function and found it hard to set up. Setting up each staff person was a little difficult.
Don’t do it
Comments: Horrible.
Pros:
Originally I liked the ease of charting and scheduling with appointment reminders… but the system is often down and being upgraded.
Cons:
Managed billing is a scam. Customer service is non existent. If you are a sole provider then take your money elsewhere or hire someone to assist you for less money overall.
Stay away from TheraNest
Comments: It worked for a few years. When I tried using more of its capabilities it does not worm
Pros:
It worked for a while. Once I started using it for billing it does not do what is promised and customer support has not at all been helpful
Cons:
The billing software does not work. The treatment planning softwares through Wiley is not at all comprehensive
Works great!
Pros:
Theranest works great for my 2-person private therapy practice. It's easy-to-use, simple, and the price is right. I'd definitely recommend Theranest to a colleague.
Cons:
There are some little design things that I wish read more easily (like the main calendar) and places where the payment collection could be easier, but there's nothing that's seriously difficult about using Theranest.
Excellent Documentation System!
Comments: I certainly think that it is a great system overall and has great features that enhance the writing experience as well as the potential to further improve as opportunities are given to make suggestions towards improvement.
Pros:
I like that I can change note types and being able to make appointments and leave comments in the appointment log section. It is good that addendums can be left related to the note already created.
Cons:
At times data does not save properly such as signatures or appointment status such as appointment "Kept" for the day of service.
Alternatives Considered:
Not made for larger organizations with multiple locations
Comments: Overall I was very disappointed and felt like I paid for a glorified calendar. They charge by client load, but clients do not just come and go. You have to wait for billing and payments, therefore I had to up my subscription twice in 6 months to keep making room. Again, I think this system would be great for a small therapy practice that has one location and keeps it all simple. It ended up costing our business 200,000 in receivables, an additional 40 hours of labor plus monthly charges for using a system that doesn’t work. Lesson learned. We switched to Kareo.
Pros:
My staff and I would unanimously agree that the calendar is amazing. I loved the ease of use, the color coding and the emails the system sends when appointments are booked. Although the repeat function was awful. We would delete appointments for the future, wouldn’t see any for the future and the client would show back up again.
Cons:
The billing, after being with them 6 months still never worked. Our office has central scheduling and multiple tax id’s. We were told they were capable of handling our size company. Our billing never went out properly and we never got a single EOB back through the system. When I confronted them about it, I was told at least my Blue Cross would be manually uploaded for us weekly and they would make it a high priority to figure out why those were not posting. I was told this the beginning of August. They uploaded those EOB’s once for us and the issue never got resolved. You also cannot call and reach customer service. The customer service is all through chat and they have very limited office hours. The reports are great for a small company but very limited for larger practices like ours. Luckily we held on to compulink during this time and sent all our billing out through them.

We appreciate all customer feedback, thank you for sharing your experience. We are sorry for any misunderstanding Erica, you do not need to wait for payments to archive clients. You can archive and unarchive at anytime not just at the point of a discharge. This allows practice owners to be in control of their own subscription payments! We also do offer phone support in addition to chat and email support. Our phone number is 1-800-867-7405 if you'd like to reach out and speak to one of our wonderful customer support folks you most certainly can! Sometimes hopping on a phone call to troubleshoot any unique insurance billing cases can provide the best results. We wish you the best of luck in your future endeavors!

TheraNest Works Well Enough
Comments: Having an EHR system really benefits my practice because I do not need to store paper charts. I like the ability to communicate in a HIPAA compliant way with clients, though I have not been able to get as much buy in from my clients around this as I would like. I appreciated the integrated telehealth system at the beginning of the pandemic, despite the fact that it was a little glitchy, but then they raise prices substantially, so I opted for another platform that was both less glitchy and a better cost value. Forms can be customized, but this is not the intuitive process I wanted it to be. I am not a computer wiz, but also I am not intimidated by computers/software. I imagine that this system would be a challenge if you were not confident in navigating unfamiliar software. Basically, it does the essentials that I need an EHR system to do. I might explore other options if it was not such a pain to consider switching everything over to a new system. I believe that it can probably do more for me than what I am getting out of it and it lacks features that I would really like to have in a system. I can make it work for me and it is not cost prohibitive to do so.
Pros:
I like that they do accept user feedback. They have tutorials available to help figure out what features are available and how to use them. I appreciate the option to allow my biller to access my appointment information without an additional fee. I imagine that there are even more helpful features if you do your own billing, but I do not utilize those features. I appreciate the Wiley practice planner add on feature to help me create treatment plans (even though these can also be highly problematic in that they are transphobic, homophobic, heteronormative, and Christian based, but this is not TheraNest's problem). I love that my clients can fill out all their forms online. This saves paper and was really handy when the pandemic hit.
Cons:
It is not as intuitive as I hoped it would be. While it has a lot of features, there are things that I think would be incredibly useful (and I am not alone in these thoughts as others have highlighted them on the user feedback platform) that have not been implemented. It can also be quite slow to load. I really do not like that I have to refresh the page often and intentionally for things to show up correctly on the page I am working on. This has caused significant communication errors with my biller, who does not understand computers as well and did not know to regularly refresh her browser. I would expect that in navigating around the site, that it would refresh automatically, but this is not the case.
Alternatives Considered:
Solid Records Management
Comments: The customer service is good and very responsive, I am just not wild about the expense.
Pros:
I like that it is easy to see whether or not I completed my notes. Integrated Telehealth appointments.
Cons:
There's not a lot of ability to see multiple calendar dates at once or move between dates. I get charged for every little thing.
Ease of Operation and Customer Support
Comments: As a rule, it seems to work well for our agency.
Pros:
The support we receive from the staff at Theranest.
Cons:
Not knowing when upgrades are coming. We recently went through an upgrade that consolidated all "Case Management" entries and remove them from the individual client folders. This requires a deeper look to find the client.
The Better Platform that is a few steps away from Prefection
Comments: I love TheraNest, and would love to work with the development team to add ideas
Pros:
The old interface look was user friendly.
Cons:
I listed a huge of them in my reviews, please read
Enjoying Theranest
Comments: So far, so good.
Pros:
It is quick and easy. I can focus on my clients instead of an EHR system.
Cons:
If the power goes out, I have to start my note from scratch.
Great TheraNest!
Comments: Overall, it is a great product that I use everyday.
Pros:
I enjoy ThetaNest because it is easy to use and is versatile.
Cons:
I don’t use some of the recent new updates.
Just Starting Out
Pros:
As a new MH business you are looking at your start up costs. The fact that TheraNest is willing to grow with you is definitely an advantage. It helps keep the cost down for the new little business.
Cons:
It seems like many clients have a hard time understanding the statements.
A review from a long time user
Comments: I have appreciated the way TN has improved incorporating features which make scheduling, reminders, calendaring, and note taking so much simplier.
Pros:
I started with TheraNest in 2014 when we implemented EMRs for our private practice. Found TN to be affordable and convenient.
Cons:
None that I need at this time. This program meets all the needs I have at this time.
Helpful EHR
Comments: Overall I have been very happy with my Theranest experience. As a solo practitioner, it was the easiest and smoothest system I tried and I appreciated the customer service when I started. The pandemic changed some things with everyone getting on line and needing help so it seemed like a longer wait for help but just the same it was a growing time for all of us. So, would I recommend Theranest based on my experience as a whole...the answer is simple.. yes.
Pros:
Ease. When I signed on the Theranest customer service was phenomenal as I was "green" with using an EHR online system.
Cons:
I would like to see more therapeutic interventions and options on the treatment plan for checks only. That would be amazingly helpful.
DO NOT EVEN THINK ABOUT IT - The worst platform for Mental Health
Comments:
We have asked for a discount due to not being able to access services we are paying for and Theranest refused constantly blaming other companies for some outages. Not our problem! Even a small discount would have been nice but some guy [sensitive content hidden]
(I believe a supervisor) was cocky enough to not provide any discounts at all. Too bad! They just lost a $2000 a month client!
Pros:
not much other than being a basic platform similar or worse to other on the market
Cons:
They have constant issues with the connectivity, system doesn't work for hours (sometimes the whole day). Very embarrassing for our clients if you can't access their data. Their customer team seems not to care and keep sending us "copy and paste" messages sorry but not really sorry, not our fault!
Select something else if you have more than one person in your office.
Comments: I do not understand where the rave reviews have come from for this software. My only guess is these reviews are from single clinician offices. If you have more than one clinician or a prescriber in your practice I would suggest selecting another software.
Pros:
I like that you can send text reminders. It helps with the no show rate in our clinic. They have great customer service - but customer service only goes so far when the software isn't working correctly.
Cons:
Form the scheduling to billing this software is riddled with functionality gaps and bugs. As a facility that have therapists and prescribing physicians the scheduling feature doesn't allow you to setup defined appointment times. Basic schedulers should allow you to define the types of appointments in your clinic and assign a time frame to them. This same functionality should extend to the TheraNest portal. Patients can go online and request any appointment time. For example an initial intake in our clinic with the psychiatrist is one hour. A patient can go line and find any available time (they typically find 15 min slots) and submit a request to schedule that time. This results in calling the patient back and finding a time. What's the point of allowing the patient to schedule/request a time if I have to call them back? I should be able to define an initial intake as an hour so my staff can't schedule that type of an appointment for less than an hour AND patients on the portal can't request an appointment for less than an hour. We finally shut the portal off because it was causing more work calling patients back then if they'd initially called and were scheduled from the get go. If you have any patients with co insurance get ready to spend an ungodly amount of time processing the secondary insurance. While they say they support secondary insurance they do not. You have to manually enter all of the information onto the claim for the secondary insurance.

Thanks for your feedback, Seneca. We were honest about our billing and client portal features from the start. We never mislead customers. We take qualifying customers seriously and encourage everyone to be transparent about their needs so we can help them determine if we'll be able to support those needs. All potential customers have a free 21-day trial period, to test the software in order to make an informed decision. We do as much as possible to support our customers and take all customer requests seriously, but the software is sold as-is, and we make no attempts to represent the software as something it isn't. Though we don't market our software to psychiatrists due to their unique needs, TheraNest seemed to initially be a good fit for you. However, your growth to a group psychiatry practice is something that TheraNest clearly is not meant to accommodate. We continue to improve our billing and client portal features and won't stop until they're flawless. Sincerely, TheraNest Team
TheraNest makes therapists' jobs easier
Comments: My overall experience with TheraNest has been great! Continues updates are making even more user-friendly!
Pros:
I like that it is easy to schedule clients, cancel sessions, reschedule sessions, etc. I particularly like being able to schedule a series as well as use an "after-hours" feature. I like that an client's initials can be used for privacy. Invoicing is easy, and I can easily see from the Agenda who has paid and who hasn't. I like the chat feature so that I can quickly communicate with other counselors and our office staff. We have multiple offices, so this helps us stay connected! I also like being able to add custom forms. And I like being able to do progress notes several different ways.
Cons:
It would be nice to be able to sign a batch of progress notes at once by checking specific ones or a using a "select all" feature.

Never felt alone; even in my darkest times.
Pros:
TheraNest has EVERYTHING in one place. I have search high and low for several years; applied, signed up, and trialed several other soft-wares, and none of them compare to TheraNest. The Client Portal is a surprise when I share the feature with my patients. The Customer Service being accessible to all providers (Inters and Residents alike) is a huge plus so I do not find myself training (and retraining) through the semester to a new class when they can find the answers easily on their own. TheraNest makes the end of my session a 10 min wrap up with documentation, and the end of my day a 5 min wrap up to submit ALL billing. I save money on not having to hire a full-time employee to manage my billing and claims; merely a contract when there is an issue with the insurance themselves and a phone call is needed beyond my knowledge.
Cons:
The only thing I could ever wish for, is prescribing rights and abilities. I plan to expand my company into the Medical Realm eventually, and this is a feature I plan to discuss with the developing team.

Love the training and customer service responsiveness, but some key features aren't well thought out
Pros:
Customer service and responsiveness is very impressive. Now that I understand how it all works together, appointment scheduling and notes are very easy to use. I used to love that they have integrated credit card processing, but for the way we run our business it has a serious flaw. They are very open to feedback, and try to be responsive to features being asked for. Since we've signed up with them in January they have added quite a few new features, some of which are really helpful, others that don't apply to the way we happen to run our business.
Cons:
Some features only seem half thought out. For example: you can write one group note and have it appli to all members of the group, but in order to sign the note you have to go into each members account. This completely negates the time saved by applying the note to all group members with one key stroke. We are a small clinic and use this as our accounts receivable software also, yet there is no accounts receivable report you can generate. They have something called an "Invoice Aging" report that lists each clients outstanding invoices, but you have to go through and manually add up all the lines to get the total. To me, having an accounts receivable report should be standard. Just give me their name and the total of what they owe us. And now for the biggest con for us: The integrated credit card processing. The structure of our clinic is that each of us earns exactly what our clients pay us (in crude terms, we "eat what we kill"). For this reason when we get a deposit in our bank account we need to be able to easily identify what transactions make up that so we can give the correct therapist credit for it. There is currently no way to get this info. Theranest suggested we look at a list of payments recently made and figure out a combo that add up. This is way too time intensive (we have a bookkeeper we have to pay to do this) and it's prone to error. We're hoping they fix this soon

Thank you for your review. You can apply a Progress Note to the entire group which can be customized for each specific client and electronically signed. We also have a Group Note that is a general note for the group sessions which can be electronically signed.
