The heart of metrics collection
Comments: We have consolidated several different monitoring products down into prometheus and use custom scripts/exporters for metrics we never before were collecting and monitoring.
Pros:
Prometheus is extremely flexible with what it can ingest, it opens all kinds of doors.
Cons:
It can be difficult to implement although the community support is there it will require work.
Prometheus review
Pros:
Integrates easily with other monitoring applications
Cons:
Maybe not so easy to learn. The alert configuration is a bit complex
Alternatives Considered:
Experience with Prometheus
Comments: It is an easy tool to implement and configure, having a correct monitoring of the environment in a short time.
Pros:
It is a very good tool for retrieving the metrics of container containers like k8s.
Cons:
The metrics display options are very limited, having to use third-party tools.
Prometheus Pros & Cons
Pros:
It is one of the popular software to monitor and visualize time-series data. Best part of it is that it is open-source. Some of the pros of Prometheus are:1. It is highly scalable and it can handle large amount of data to monitor.2. It provides a powerful query language to retrieve and analyze data in a flexible way.3. It has a large and active community so all your queries will be answered.4. It is quite easy to use and setup as it has very clear documentation.
Cons:
Every software has its cons, some of Prometheus' are below:1. It is resource intensive and it hogs on system memory.2. It is easy to use but has a steep learning curve.3. It has limited visualisation options and are basic.4. It is not robust in distributed tracing category as compared to other monitoring solutions.
Best modern monitoring and metrics tool
Comments: It was as simple as building a template script and including it between applications. The only thing necessary is to customize the Prometheus metrics that you want to track in every project.
Pros:
We were in need of a tool that can track metrics in any project, independently of the programming language on which it was built. You can integrate the exposed tracked metrics as endpoints and consume them in any graphic dashboard to visualize the results in real time. The service includes a variety of customizable wrappers for any metric.
Cons:
There is a learning path you have to follow before implementing Prometheus, which also includes third-party software for building graphic dashboards in order to visualize the metrics.
Good tool to monitoring and alerting
Comments: It was useful tool in order to identify bottlenecks and some alerts but eventually we change to kibana
Pros:
You can visualize everything, the powerful query based in elastic gives prometheus a very flexible tool for explore logs, find problems and much more. You can define very specific rules
Cons:
It consumes a lot of resources but is something you can expect from any tool of this nature.
