Intuitive, Cost Effective Performer
Comments: On the plus side, the true test of a programmable database is (in my humble estimation) when you can easily (and intuitively) create a simple application without too much frustration (a without consulting the documentation too frequently). I was able to figure out how to make Brilliant shine in under a 1/2 hour. So, Brilliant definitely fits this description. The report writer was also very easy to use; much more so than in some other programmable databases. One unique feature is the ability to display data in a calendar format. this is a nice touch for business and project management oriented applications. Now for the negatives. Unfortunately, I find it difficult to replace File Maker with Brilliant, despite it being easier to use, as their top version, which is required to make your database into an executable program, is several times more expensive than File Maker Pro Advanced. File Maker also provides Mac support that Brilliant doesn't - all for less money, albeit a steeper learning curve. The documentation is adequate, but it is riddled with grammatical errors that might intimidate novice users. The ability to create separate administrator versus non-administrator users locks down the database design. You can purchase a lower cost 'deployment' version that operates in a similar fashion. All said, for the Windows environment Brilliant is a solid platform for desktop/single user application solutions.

Comments: I constantly search for an alternative to BD and so far to no avail. This product coupe be the best in rRAD If the builder would dedicate time to improve. Array fields and an editor to automate mundane tasje will do.
